How to choose a name for your game

    1. Generate widely. Make 50 to 100 candidates across a few genres and styles, and star anything with a spark. Add your own keyword to steer the results.
    2. Say it out loud. If a friend cannot spell it after hearing it once, it will be hard to search for.
    3. Check availability. Use the Steam, itch.io, Google and .com buttons next to each name, and check app stores and social handles.
    4. Test with players. Show the shortlist with your capsule art and see which one people remember a day later.

    Naming patterns that work

    • Invented compounds (Minecraft, Stardew Valley): unique and easy to search.
    • Genre + twist (Supermarket Simulator, Lethal Company): tells players exactly what they get.
    • Evocative phrase (Hollow Knight, Dead Cells): sets the mood in two words.
    • Title + subtitle: a short, brandable name with a descriptive subtitle for search.

    A quick name checklist

    • One to three words, ideally under 20 characters.
    • Readable on the small Steam capsule (462 × 174).
    • Hints at the genre or mood.
    • Not too close to a famous game (players and stores will confuse them).
    • Searchable: a unique spelling helps players find you on Google and YouTube.
    • No unintended meanings in the languages you plan to support.

For commercial projects, also search the trademark databases of your main markets before you commit.

    FAQ

What makes a good game name?

Short (one to three words), easy to spell after hearing it once, hints at the genre or feeling, and is searchable: if Google shows a hundred other things for the name, players will not find your game.

How do I check if a game name is taken?

Use the Steam, itch.io and Google links next to each name, check app stores, and look for a matching domain and social handles. For commercial games, also search the trademark database of your main markets.

Can I use the generated names commercially?

Yes, they are free to use. The generator combines common words, so always check that nobody else already uses or has trademarked the name.
